Christ Church

Welcome

Picture
Welcome to our website.  We are a diverse mix of people reflecting the ethnic and cultural diversity of north London. Although we have the titles Baptist and United Reformed, like many churches we have people from virtually every church background and none. Why not come and meet us? I have been told by people who have joined us recently they received a warm welcome and I’m sure you will also.

History

We were formed in 1995 by the union of New Southgate Baptist Church and Friern Barnet United Reformed Church. These two churches have long and distinguished histories from the late 19th century. We sought to build on that past, by forming a new Christian fellowship at the end of the 20th century, to be a church for the beginning of the 21st century. Our roots also lie in the Congregational, Presbyterian and Churches of Christ which came together to form the United Reformed Church.
We are somewhat unusual in that we have two buildings. One is normally used for public worship and the other largely for service to the community.

We are not part of the ‘established church’ in this country but are of the Free Church or Nonconformist tradition. We are also free in the sense that our worship does not have to follow a set form, or use much ritual or ceremony. It is relatively simple, informal and fairly traditional.

No two congregations are the same; they can vary greatly in their understanding of what being a follower of Jesus means. Individuals within congregations equally have their weaknesses and strengths. If you want to know how we measure up come and meet us.

Sundays

The heart of our church life is our worship of God on a Sunday when we meet at 11am. We meet approximately for one hour.

Communion is celebrated on the third Sunday of the month. We welcome all those who love our Lord Jesus Christ and seek to follow him, to receive the elements of bread and wine.

In our worship we all meet together then separate into appropriate age groups. Acrèche is available for the very young. Parade services are held monthly when all the uniformed groups are invited to attend and encouraged to participate. We seek to involve people and use both traditional and contemporary music during our worship.
