Christmas time came and went and we celebrated the coming of the New Year and before we knew it, it was time to have our first meeting of 2018; our “Welcome Back” afternoon on the 9th January. We were fortunate that the weather was reasonable and the Parlour was warm.
We talked about the things we had done over the holiday period whilst enjoying our tea and biscuits. Then we told some “funny” tales including the time one of our ladies bought a teapot from a well known store. When she arrived home she found it had a crack in it and it was leaking. On returning it to the shop the young assistant said “You must have poured hot water in it”!! At our next meeting on the 23rd we discussed shopping in our “younger” days and compared this with today, noting how many of our much loved stores are now closed or have been taken over:- Woolworths, C & A, British Home Stores, Owen Owens, Timothy Whites and Radio Rentals.
One place which has stood the pace of time is a shop called “James Smith & Sons in New Oxford Street, which sells umbrellas, canes and walking sticks. They have been there over 140 years!
Our February meetings are on the 13th and 27th at 2pm. in the Parlour. We would love to share these afternoons with you. Gladys Townsend
