Words of Encouragement
Wasn’t it wonderful to have such a warm Summer? I hope those of you who went away on holiday had a wonderful time as well as those who spent the Summer at home. Now the holidays are over, we are all back to the reality of our daily living again. That thing we are waiting for, which may be healing; new or better job; new or better accommodation; improved relationships at work or home; the right partner; or more amenable children remains the same. We are back to asking the questions, ‘When will this difficult situation change Lord?’ ‘When will you answer my prayer?’
Try not to lose hope. Do not stop praying or living a Christ-like, obedient life. Things will improve in God’s appointed time. It may not be exactly as we dreamt or hoped but Jesus will improve the situation in ways that prosper our soul and body. He will fulfil his promise to do new things for us as written below.

Isaiah 43:16,18-19 This is what the Lord says-- he who made a way through the sea, a path through the mighty waters. “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland. Ola |

I was having a conversation with a friend not too long ago. I asked how she was coping with a problem that had bothered her for a while. Her usual response to my question was always a long monologue which was understandable. However, her response that day was different. She simply replied, ‘I am contented.’ I asked if things had improved. She replied ‘No, but I have decided to trust God, thank Him for what is good in my life and to focus more on the good things. The decision had made an enormous difference to her state of mind, and she felt better for it. Wow! Praise be to God was my reply.
The conversation drew my mind to Habakkuk 3:17-18 below. A reminder to trust Jesus in all situations. Especially where it is taking too long for our situation to improve, to remind ourselves He is the all-powerful God and there will be a turnaround for the better soon even if not in the way we expect.
Habakkuk 3:17-18 Though the fig tree does not bud
and there are no grapes on the vines,
though the olive crop fails
and the fields produce no food,
though there are no sheep in the pen
and no cattle in the stalls,
yet I will rejoice in the LORD,
I will be joyful in God my Saviour.

I could be impatient. I do not enjoy waiting in queues. I try to avoid roads with hold-ups. The motoring apps have also encouraged my impatience. At the onset of a journey, the App may say the journey will take one hour for example, and that I am on the fastest route. Twenty minutes into the journey, it will then say, ‘you can save five minutes by changing the route’. Why would one want to change route because of saving five minutes? I guess it is because the App knows most of us are impatient. I am learning to ignore the App and trying to be a bit more patient in the power of the Holy Spirit.
It is not easy to exercise patience when we are in a hurry to hear from God. When what we pray for and expect to happen is taking months to be answered if at all. God answers us according to what is best for us and not necessarily as expected. Be more patient in the power of the Holy Spirit. Stay with Jesus. Psalm 27:14 (NIV) Wait for the LORD; be strong and take heart and wait for the LORD. Ola Lawal |
I read the words of Jesus,’ Peace be with you’ so many times at Easter that it felt like a personal message to me. After His death on the cross, the disciples were scared, anxious and in hiding behind a closed door. They had witnessed on Good Friday the suffering, humiliation, and the slow, painful death of Jesus Christ, their Rabbi, on the cross. They feared the same fate awaited them. Then Jesus came through a closed door and appeared to them. He did not say do not be fearful, worried, or anxious. All he said was ‘Peace be with you’. Meaning, when they are in the presence of Jesus, there is nothing to fear. No closed door, anything or anyone could stop them from having His peace and joy. Similarly, when we are in the presence of Jesus and we acknowledge Him as the risen Lord, our worries and fear will soon disappear because we believe He is all powerful and nothing is impossible with Him. Stop trying to resolve by yourself whatever is causing you anxiety or making you want to hide. Be in His presence, take it to Jesus Christ in prayer. He has also left us with His peace as written below.
John 14:27 (GNT) Peace is what I leave with you; it is my own peace that I give you. I do not give it as the world does. Do not be worried and upset; do not be afraid. Ola Lawal |
It is true, the Lord has risen! Luke 24:34. Christ is risen! Christ is risen indeed!! Alleluia!!! Thank you, God, for your amazing grace and your love for us. Thank you, that because Jesus is risen, we are in Jesus Christ, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness, and redemption. 1 Corinthians 1:30. Thank you, Lord Jesus that your kingdom is everlasting and cannot be destroyed. Help us to remain holy and faithful as we await your second coming. The appointed time by God the Father, when we you will return in glory to judge the world and make all things new. Easter means, our Saviour, Jesus Christ is the Lord of new beginnings, new days, and new lives. Let us move forward boldly with Him.
Daniel 7:14 (NIV) He (Jesus Christ) was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all nations and peoples of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed. Happy, Blessed, Easter Ola Lawal |
I enjoyed the Advent O Antiphons, produced by the URC, which we used for Bible study. O Antiphons are short verses used before and after Mary’s song, the Magnificat. The O Antiphons point to who the coming King, Jesus Christ is, and what He is coming to do as written in the Scripture including the Apocrypha. Thank God that Jesus has come to redeem us from our sins by His death and resurrection. We await His second coming when He will come to judge the world and make all things new as written in the scriptures.
It is great to note that Jesus is not only the King but also our forever great High Priest, in the order of Melchizedek, (Psalm 110:4). He sits on the right hand of God, interceding for us. Romans 8:34. Remember to take all to Him in prayer, failures, fears, or needs. Jesus Christ, our Saviour, and friend is always very willing to forgive and help us as written below. Hebrews 4:15-16 (NIRV) We have a high priest (Jesus the Son of God), who can feel it when we are weak and hurting. We have a high priest who has been tempted in every way, just as we are. But he did not sin. So let us boldly approach God’s throne of grace. Then we will receive mercy. We will find grace to help us when we need it. Ola Lawal |

Thank you, Lord Jesus for your care in 2022 and for bringing us safely into 2023.
Whatever 2023 holds in store, try to remain firmly in Jesus Christ’s embrace.
Try not to dwell on the sadness or fears of last year.
In this year 2023, go forward boldly in the power of Jesus, knowing we have Emmanuel, God with us, always. The Light of the world who shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. When in doubt due to the realities you see, try to see by faith and not by sight. Reassure yourself of God’s forever faithfulness by singing or reciting the words of the much-loved hymn below instead.
‘Through the love of God our Saviour;
All will be well;
Free and changeless is His favour;
All, all is well.
Precious is the blood that healed us;
Perfect is the grace that sealed us;
Strong the hand stretched out to shield us;
All must be well.’
(Mary Bowley Peters, 1847)

There are uncertainty and anxiety about things presently. We are still struggling with the trauma of Covid-19 which is on the rise once more. There is also the disappointment of shelving plans due to rising inflation, increasing mortgage and rental fees, as well as the forthcoming stealth taxes. We are anxious about how to pay for food, utility bills, and other essentials with limited funds.
It will therefore not be surprising that we struggle to focus on God’s goodness or to thank Him for His love with the various uncertainties around us. Whatever pain, anxiety, or disappointment you are carrying, take it to our Lord God in prayer. Jesus Christ is our refuge and the present help for those who choose to trust Him. Remember to praise and thank Him always. We will yet rejoice and be glad in Him. Psalm 5:11-12 (NLT) But let all who take refuge in you rejoice; let them sing joyful praises forever. Spread your protection over them, that all who love your name may be filled with joy. For you bless the godly, O Lord; you surround them with your shield of love. Ola Lawal |

I recently read Acts 9 and was amazed at how focussed Apostle Paul was, on telling everyone Jesus is the Messiah despite opposition and death threats by the Jews and the Hellenists (ancient Greeks). He refused to get distracted and remained contented that God’s grace was enough for him and would keep him safe. For someone who was recently persecuting Christians, Paul’s conviction and concentration on his mission was incredible and made possible by the power of the Holy Spirit.
As followers of Jesus there is lot to emulate in the story of Apostle Paul. Let us ask for the Holy Spirit to fill us afresh. In the power of the Holy Spirit to be, contented and focussed on the mission to spread the gospel instead of on worldly distractions which does not prosper our souls. We are in the world but not of the world. John 17:16. By so doing our church too will have peace, be built up as we live in the fear of the Lord only and in the power of the Holy Spirit.
Acts 9:31 NRSVUE
Meanwhile the church throughout Judea, Galilee, and Samaria had peace and was built up. Living in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, it increased in numbers.

Thank God for the great warm summer. I am not complaining about the sunshine but agree a bit of rain would have made it better still. What some of us must find disconcerting despite the pleasant weather, is the onslaught of unwelcome news about the economy. Inflation will not only keep rising but we may be heading towards a yearlong or more, recession. There is no doubt the price of everything is on the increase. We only need to compare what we paid three months ago for our groceries with what we now pay for lesser number of groceries. To compound this, having just turned the corner on Covid-19, we have now learnt there is a rare viral infection called monkey pox that is on the increase.
I guess it will be abnormal for one not to feel a little worried, but we should not forget God’s benefits and help to us in the past. All these changes are part of our cyclical fallen world and better times are around the corner. We have the same Sovereign God, the Creator and Sustainer. He loved us deeply and tells us not to worry. Focus on the mighty power of Jesus. Keep on trusting and seeking Him. Sing the hymn below when worry raises its ugly head. Verse 6 of ‘Through all the changing scenes of life’ (MP 702) Nahum Tate & Nicholas Brady Fear Him, ye saints, and you will then Have nothing else to fear; Make you His service your delight, He’ll make your wants His care. |
Our world had seen a lot of shakings in recent times. Wild fires, earthquakes, hurricane, floods, pandemic, wars and economic downturn. The media also constantly talk about the sufferings ahead due to the pandemic and the war in Ukraine. The ongoing sky - rocketing prices of everything meant many might have to choose between eating and heating or turn to charitable organisations for help. No wonder many are anxious about what the future holds and thinking of ways to cut back on their spending.
Easter which is fast approaching is a time of renewal and restoration. A time of new beginnings. A time to remind ourselves that Jesus has conquered all. No matter the shakings or sufferings we may have to endure, nothing can separate us from the love of God, which is the most important thing. The death of Jesus on the cross and His resurrection on the third day, meant all who repent and accept Jesus as Lord and Saviour are redeemed and assured of eternal life. When worry or anxiety rears its ugly head, hold on to the assurance that Jesus loves you and nothing can separate you from His love as written below by Apostle Paul. |
Romans 8:35 & 37-39 (NLT) Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love? Does it mean he no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death? No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us. And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia! Happy, Blessed Easter.

It is interesting how busy everywhere had quickly become, now that things have virtually returned to normal. It feels almost as if there was never any lockdown or restrictions due to the Covid -19 pandemic. Busyness and exhaustion is slowly creeping into people’s life again especially now we are told to stop working from home. I am quite pleased and thank God that we can all move around freely and do what we want once again.
However, some of the good habits we developed during the restrictions could soon be forgotten if we are not careful. For example, our consistency in prayer, Bible-reading and fellowship with one another could soon be overtaken with busyness again. Let us try to remain steadfast in spending regular time with God. To trust Him with all things. Remaining close to God can only bless us, give us real peace and make our paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 4:26 Give careful thought to the paths for your feet and be steadfast in all your ways. Ola Lawal |

During our worship on 2nd January 2022, our minister, Revd. Ruth Moriarty showed us the excavated wall paintings of the church built in Lullingstone Roman Villa. She felt it was probably the oldest church in the United Kingdom, dated at around 385AD.
The paintings were of worshippers with arms raised praying and praising God. She said they may be the first charismatics in the UK.
What struck me about the paintings was the faith and the conviction of the worshippers. They believed God should be earnestly worshipped with our mind, body and soul. King David did the same lifting his arms and dancing before the Ark in 2nd Samuel 6:14. God saw King David’s constant exuberance for Him and blessed him for all generations.
Brothers and sisters, try not to dwell on negative news and behaviours or be fearful. We have the same faithful, loving God that those 385AD worshippers believed in. Let us make this year a year of worshipping God in prayer and praising. We too, can only be blessed for it. Let us like King David believe in God’s unfailing constant love, care and an eternity with Him as written below.
Psalm 23:4a, 6 (NLT) Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will live in the house of the LORD forever.

Thank you, Lord Jesus for bringing us safely into 2022.
Are we going to live 2022 with the full assurance of God’s love and His ability to care for all our needs? Are we going to trust absolutely in His ability to protect us from all ills?
Whatever the year holds in store for us as a church or individually, let us try to hold on to our belief that all will be well because Jesus Christ has promised not to forsake us.
Try singing or saying the song below for reassurance of God’s love as regularly as needed.

As we approached Christmas 2020 last year, we all wondered when Covid-19 infections will recede and when the lockdown will be fully lifted by the government. It is great that many have now received Covid-19 vaccinations and the lockdown had been fully lifted. Many are now hopeful of celebrating 2021 Christmas with family and friends.
We thank our Lord God, the Light of the world, that His light has overshadowed the darkness of last year. As we celebrate the birth of Jesus, remember to pray for those who will find Christmas difficult because of the loss of loved ones, ill-health, displacement, broken relationships, or loss of job. Also, remember that the light of Jesus continues to shine brightly. His light is right at the end of the tunnel of whatever we’re going though that is causing us fear and anxiety. Keep on trusting Jesus our great light and Prince of Peace as written below. He deeply loves you. May the light of Jesus continually burn brightly in our lives and His peace be with us this Christmas season. Amen. Isaiah 9:2 & 6 The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned. A child is born to us! A son is given to us! And he will be our ruler. He will be called, “Wonderful[b] Counsellor,” “Mighty God,” “Eternal Father,” “Prince of Peace.” Happy, Blessed & Peaceful Christmas Everyone Ola Lawal |
How do you see yourself? Someone created in the image of God, (Genesis 1:27), or something else? It is difficult to see oneself as someone created in the image of God when all one sees is rejection and abandonment. This could be due to other’s perception, the way we are treated or something said to us as a child.
A few months ago, I read about a successful film director, who claimed his mother was unsupportive of his writing at the age of 12. She didn’t think much would come out of it and discouraged him. He was so upset with his mother and vowed not to give her a penny when he becomes a successful writer. It is sad to note that at 58yrs old, the image painted by his mother still bothered him and he still finds it difficult to forgive her despite his great success. As Christian, we should readily forgive others. Jesus asked us to forgive not just seven times but seventy-seven times, Matthew 18:22. I agree it is difficult not to hold on to a wrong image of oneself or become vengeful, when told one is junk or treated as a loser who could never achieve much. If this had happened to you, I implore you to reject this wrong image of yourself. You are wonderfully made by God as written below. Reject all the ungodly behaviours you have developed due to this bad image of yourself. You are a winner through Christ who loved us, Romans 8:37 Ola Lawal |
Psalm 139: 13-14 For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.

I watched a bit of the July 2021 Olympics in Japan. I was amazed at the strength, courage and endurance of many of the athletes. I marvelled at the men and women who ran around 42km. marathon in about 30 degrees heat. I was proud of the many who won medals. Then there were those whose dreams came to nought despite hours of preparations because of injury or ill-health or just couldn’t complete the task due to fatigue.
It got me thinking that while so many are fit and strong, so many others suffer from ill-health, some of them long-term. We also regularly hear of perfectly healthy people, suddenly passing away. I guess only God fully understands why these things are so. All we can do is rejoice and thank Lord Jesus when in good health. While when unwell, or mourning the loss of a loved one, not to lose hope or start sinning in rebellion. To try holding on instead to our ever-present, loving God and His promises of healing and restoration as written in Isaiah 57.
Isaiah 57:15, 18 & 19
15 “I am the high and holy God, who lives forever. I live in a high and holy place, but I also live with people who are humble and repentant, so that I can restore their confidence and hope.
18 --- I will heal them. I will lead them and help them, and I will comfort those who mourn.
19 I offer peace to all, both near and far! I will heal my people.

Summer came and went rather quickly. I noted many went on international holidays despite the unpredictable colours allocated to the country. The Government coded many countries based on each country’s Covid-19 infection rates, as either ‘Red’- High, ‘Amber’- Average or ‘Green’- Low. It was interesting to note some booked holidays based purely on the country’s colour in order to avoid having to quarantine after the holiday. While some simply travelled as wanted despite the country’s colour.
The other interesting thing was that the Government changed some country’s colour from Red to Green, Green to Red and Amber to either Red or Green as the infection rates changed during these holidays. Meaning some of those who carefully chose Green destinations with the hope of not having to quarantine on return from holiday had to do so, while some of those who went to Red coded countries and expected to quarantine did not need to.
These observations got me wondering whether we should be basing our decision – making solely on our perceived reality. Or to trust Lord Jesus, who told us to not be anxious about anything but to take everything to Him in prayer first. Many decisions will face us as we negotiate the lifting of the lockdown. Instead of basing decision-taking on what we perceive as safer, wiser or better, let us pray about it first. If we feel at peace after praying, to trust God and to go ahead in faith.
Philippians 4:6 -7 (NIV) Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Ola Lawal

The postponement of the end of lockdown restrictions from 21st June to 19th July 2021 is a bit disappointing. One can only hope the restrictions will eventually be lifted soon.
I guess it is rather difficult to have hope when circumstances are miserable and show no major sign of improvement. Apart from the full lifting of restrictions, there are other things many had been hoping for but are yet to materialize. Such as, improved health; a new or better job; happier relationships or marriage; or a child.
I recently read the story of Hannah who hoped for a child in 1 Samuel 1. Hannah endured years of ridicule and taunting in the hands of Peninah her husband’s other wife who had children. Elkanah, her husband also came across as either insensitive or not too wise. He believed he was enough to make up for Hannah’s childlessness and could not understand her tears of sadness and frustration.
I guess most of us have insensitive family members or know downright horrible people who had bullied us for one reason or the other. The astounding thing to me was Hannah’s noble behaviour. She refused to get into any arguments or fight with her tormentors but took her disappointment and request to God in fervent prayer.
We can all learn from Hannah’s inspirational example. To ask the Lord God whatever you are hoping for in fervent prayer and trust Him like Hannah to answer. He can and will at the appointed time resolve whatever is bothering us or silence whoever is taunting us as He did for Hannah. He is our forever Lord God and His glory will always be magnified in our lives.
1 Samuel 1: 9-11 & 20
---Hannah got up. She was deeply distressed, and she cried bitterly as she prayed to the Lord. -- “Lord Almighty, look at me, your servant! See my trouble and remember me! Don't forget me!
So it was that she became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel, and explained, ‘I asked the Lord for him.’

How is your faith these days? Are you struggling to believe God sees, hears or love you? Can God still do the impossible, the humanly unexplainable or understandable? ‘It will take a miracle for that to happen’ is a rather common phrase. Meaning it cannot happen because miracles are far-fetched. Yet, we regularly hear and see God moving in various miraculous ways. Changing situations and people’s life in small or big ways.
During this pandemic we have heard of patients, the doctors thought were goners, but lived to tell us about their miracle. People who lost jobs but got a new job unexpectedly. While some people got promoted at work, despite the media saying the economy will take a while to recover. To me, these are some reminders that our All-powerful (Omnipotent), All-knowing (Omniscient) and All-together everywhere at all times (Omnipresent) God is the same today, tomorrow and forever. He can still move mountains and break down Jericho walls. In faith, (meaning explained in Hebrews below), take whatever is troubling you to the Lord God in prayer. Believe He hears you and can resolve it. Albeit not necessarily as expected but in God’s better way. When He starts answering your prayers, remember to thank Him! Hebrews 11:1 & 3 (GNT) To have faith is to be sure of the things we hope for, to be certain of the things we cannot see. It is by faith that we understand that the universe was created by God's word, so that what can be seen was made out of what cannot be seen. Ola Lawal |
One thing the pandemic has brought to mind is the fact that we have no true control over anything. Now that we are hopefully edging towards some form of normality, many will be attempting to regain ‘control’. Devising various strategies on how to regain the old exuberant and individualistic way of life. I doubt this to be a wise forward.
Apart from acknowledging God’s greatness and His omnipotence at all times, our goal should not be on how to return to the status quo. It should be on how to try and live a better, more loving, and selfless, inclusive life, where Jesus reigns. A life where our foremost goal is to seek God and His righteousness as commanded by Jesus. It is only by so doing that we will thrive and prosper in all things just as our soul prospers no matter what the future may hold.
Matthew 6:31, 33-34
So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Our minister, Revd. Ruth Moriarty recommended ‘Worship in the Wilderness’ personal devotions, by Sarah and Sam Hargreaves for our Lent study. The booklet was on how to cope when we find ourselves in some sort of wilderness. This could be due to the loss of a loved one or job or not getting what we crave from God.
Wilderness it said, is a time to worship and draw closer to God. A spot-on booklet for Lent in my opinion, considering the difficult time we had all endured due to the pandemic.
Some of the suggestions it gave for coping when in the wilderness were to try and remember God’s goodness in the past, praise and thank Him for them. To sacrifice more of our time and money for those in need. To be compassionate and try to point others to God’s love and salvation.
The Pandemic will hopefully be in the past soon.
Easter represents a new beginning. We may not get back what we have lost but we are assured of something far greater than anything we want, need or had lost. An eternal, joyous life because Jesus has risen from the dead. Jesus has conquered all and will make all things new. He loves us deeply and will never abandon us. This Easter, ask Jesus to breathe new life into you. Start afresh and move forward with our Lord Jesus.
Hebrews 13:20-21 (ESV).
Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, equip you with everything good that you may do his will, working in us that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.
Jesus has risen! He has risen indeed!
Happy, Blessed Easter.

It is incredible the 2021 season of Lent is here and the situation hasn’t really changed much since the 2020 one. We spent some of that in lockdown too. We prayed and hoped then, that things would return to normal very soon. Well, it has not. One may thus be tempted not to observe this Lent with prayer and if possible fasting. Life, after all had become rather more difficult, and sad, for many in spite of all the prayers.
Things might not have improved much but God answered some of the prayers with the four different types of vaccines now available worldwide to protect us from the Covid-19 virus. New drugs had also been found to reduce the fatality amongst those that caught the virus. All these happened because of God’s mercy and wisdom. Do not become frustrated. If anything, try to draw closer still to God during this Lent with prayer, bible reading and participation in most, if not all of the Church’s Lent activities. Try to keep in mind that our Lord God deeply loves us. Let us try to remember and hold on to His promises of Isaiah 41 written below. Isaiah 41:10 & 13 (NKJV) Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.’ For I, the Lord your God, will hold your right hand, Saying to you, ‘Fear not, I will help you.’ Ola Lawal |
I was lamenting on the phone about the new lockdown to a friend when she kindly said, ‘God is on the throne; He will sort out what is going on soon’. I believed her, but couldn’t help wondering how such a statement will come across to a non-believer or someone struggling with their faith. More so in this our new world where life had been far from normal for so long and rather hard for many. It might be rather difficult for such a person to believe or agree with her statement.
I guess the better answer could be to remind such a person of how God is continuously active in our world. To talk about His creations and the continuity of life. The continual day and night, the seasons, the daily new births, and so on, despite the ongoing lockdown and restrictions. I truly believe God is on the throne as my friend said and working His purpose out. Don’t focus long on any setbacks or drawbacks. Try to put your trust in Jesus Christ. Lift up your spirit by spending more time on thanking and praising our Lord and God who is on the throne, like the saints and living creatures in heaven as written below.

I am sure many of us are glad to see the end of the unimaginable 2020 and its devastation.
Thank you, Lord Jesus for your care in 2020 and for bringing us safely into 2021.
Whatever 2021 holds in store, try to remain firmly in Jesus Christ’s embrace.
Try not to dwell on the sadness and the devastation of last year.
In this 2021, go forward boldly in the power of Jesus, knowing we have a faithful Shepherd who will never abandon His sheep. The Light of the world who shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
When fear or worry raises its ugly head, try singing or reciting the words of the much-loved hymn below for the reassurance of God’s love and faithfulness to you.
“Through the love of God our Saviour;
All will be well;
Free and changeless is His favour;
All, all is well.
Precious is the blood that healed us;
Perfect is the grace that sealed us;
Strong the hand stretched out to shield us;
All must be well.”

My lovely Commissioning service and celebration as a URC Synod Accredited Lay Preacher, on Sunday, 19th January 2020 felt like it happened in another year. I continue to thank Lord Jesus immensely for His call and love.
However, none of us could have imagined that a month or so after the celebration, a virus called COVID -19 will disrupt the year causing so much devastation and difficulty across most of the world. Neither could we have envisaged that in order to prevent the spread of the virus, 2020 will be a year of country lock-downs and social distancing. A year we were not allowed to worship inside the church, visit one another freely or sit closely together. Or hug loved ones when they visit us at home, in care homes or dying in the hospital. A year spouses were disallowed from accompanying pregnant partners to hospital appointments or the delivery. It is also incredible the numerous lives that had been turned upside down either because of the loss of loved ones or jobs because of the pandemic.
No wonder many have concluded the 2020 Christmas celebration cannot be the same. It cannot be as exuberant or as extravagant as previous years. Nevertheless, I feel the true meaning of Christmas looms larger this year. Christmas is about Jesus Christ, God incarnate, and Saviour, who came into the world to save us because He deeply loves us. Considering how difficult, the year had turned out to be, we need the love, grace and mercy, of Immanuel, (God with us), more than ever this Christmas. We also need to uplift ourselves with the truth that Jesus the light of the world, had overcome all darkness including Covid -19, which will soon pass. This Christmas may be more somber, but we, His children, should try not to be afraid or sad. Jesus Christ will help us through this Christmas and beyond because He has promised to be with us always. He will grant us His peace, comfort and joy. Rest in His love.

Brothers and sisters, it seems the uncertain time created by Covid-19 is likely to continue for a while longer. It is natural to wonder if this will ever come to an end. It’s also natural to dwell on the inconveniences and devastation it had created this year.
One, as Apostle Peter said in 2 Peter3:8, ‘—one day is with the Lord as a thousand years and a thousand years as one day’ KJV.
So, let us be patient, Covid-19, will soon pass.
Two, try not to dwell too much on what you cannot do much about. Let us focus on praising and thanking our Lord God instead for His love, protection and sustenance.
Psalm 95 is a great song of praise that we could all use to lift our spirit as London goes into Tier 2 and its restrictions.
Psalm 95:1-3, 6-7
Come let us praise the Lord!
Let us sing for joy to God who protects us!
For the Lord is a mighty God, a mighty king over all the gods.
Come, let us bow down and worship Him; let us kneel before the Lord our maker!
He is our God, we are the people He cares for, the flock for which he provides.

We don’t really know where we are going or coming with this Covid-19. One minute it is diminishing and the next, places are being locked down again. No one truly feels safe from this silent, invisible enemy. Hence, the reluctance of some to go back to work or attend church even if opened. It is true we all have to assess our individual risks and decide on what is best for us.
However, we can only do so much to protect ourselves. Let us remember we serve an all-powerful, all-knowing God who loves us. Lord Jesus is the one who preserves and keeps us safe as written in Psalm 121. Let us try to remember this when fear raises its ugly head and hold on to it. Pray and leave the rest to Jesus Christ, our Keeper and Preserver.
Psalm 121: 5-8 (NKJV)
The Lord is your keeper;
The Lord is your shade at your right hand.
The sun shall not strike you by day,
Nor the moon by night.
The Lord shall preserve you from all evil;
He shall preserve your soul.
The Lord shall preserve your going out and your coming in
From this time forth, and even forevermore.

We thank God that things have slowly started to return to normal after the traumatising effect of Covid-19. One of the songs that was introduced during the pandemic is ‘The Blessing’ which our minister, Rev. Ruth Moriarty shared with us. The lyrics of the song resonated with many in a new way. It reminded us of God’s love for us amidst the fear and disruptions. Just as it did for the Israelite's who had been wandering in the desert for many years when God told Aaron, the priest, through Moses, to always proclaim the blessing on them.
We hear it most Sundays when the minister proclaims the blessing on us as we depart, but barely think or meditate on God’s promises, written below. It had become more of a routine. I believe one of the good things that came out of the pandemic is the reminder of God’s eternal love for us through the song. It reminded us that no matter what we had been through, still going through or hoping for, God’s eternal promises to us, His children, remain firm. His promise to bless and keep us. To shine His face (His love and mercy) on us and be gracious to us. To always turn his face towards us and give us peace.
Brothers and sisters, let us move forward boldly with our Lord Jesus,
knowing His promise never fails. Our future is secured.
Let us stay in His love and keep trusting Him.
Numbers 6:22-26
The Lord said to Moses, “Tell Aaron and his sons, ‘This is how you are to
bless the Israelites. Say to them:
“‘“The Lord bless you
and keep you;
the Lord make his face shine on you
and be gracious to you;

Many of us have found time in lockdown rather bizarre. Our days appeared to have gone faster than normal. This to me was odd, considering we were indoors and many did less, compared to before the lockdown. One of the reasons for this according to some was the fact that our day had become sort of repetitive and predictable. I am unsure of the reason. However, my experience of time during this lockdown helped to draw my attention to what the Psalmist meant when he said, ‘For you, (i.e. God), a thousand years are as a passing day, as brief as a few night hours.’ Psalm 90:4. God’s timing is obviously beyond our understanding. Hence, whatever we are waiting or hoping for, but think God is taking too long to answer is not long to God at all. It is our impatience and perception of time that makes us feel God is taking His time to answer us. Friends, as we slowly enter a new ‘normal’ after this pandemic lockdown, be patient. God is faithful and always gives us what we need at the right time. Let us continue to put our trust and hope in our loving Lord God to grant us all we need to cope with the ‘new normal’. When in doubt, remind yourself with the words of Moses written below: |
Deuteronomy 7:9 (NLV Translation)
Understand, therefore, that the Lord your God is indeed God. He is the faithful God who keeps his covenant for a thousand generations and lavishes his unfailing love on those who love him and obey his commands.

None of us can believe the devastation Covid -19 virus has caused so far. The amount of people who have lost their lives and continue to do so is unimaginable. Many people’s lives have also been turned upside down with the numerous job losses. We have also been told to expect significant deep and hard recession by the Chancellor of the Exchequer, meaning there will be more suffering in the near future.
It is rather difficult not be swept along by the numerous depressing news around us. However, since we belong to Christ, we are Abraham’s seed and heirs according to the promise - Galatians 3:29. Hence, we have the hope that whatever the future may bring, God remains our anchor, our Rock, which cannot be moved. He will look after us. Let us keep trusting in our Saviour’s deep love for us. Hold on firmly to the passage below. |
Hebrews 6: 17-19 Amplified Bible (AMP)
17 In the same way God, in His desire to show to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable nature of His purpose, intervened and guaranteed it with an oath, 18 so that by two unchangeable things [His promise and His oath] in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled [to Him] for refuge would have strong encouragement and indwelling strength to hold tightly to the hope set before us. 19 This hope [this confident assurance] we have as an anchor of the soul [it cannot slip and it cannot break down under whatever pressure bears upon it]—a safe and steadfast hope that enters within the veil [of the heavenly temple, that most Holy Place in which the very presence of God dwells], 20 where Jesus has entered [in advance] as a forerunner for us, having become a High Priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.

None of us could have imagined that barely three months into the year 2020, that most of the world will be in lockdown because of Covid-19 virus. One of the ways I have been trying to cope with the lockdown is by reading books and articles that attract my attention.
Loneliness is a hot topic presently due to the lockdown. I am not a fashionista but an article on loneliness in a recent ‘Stylist’ magazine caught my attention. In it, Dr. Becky Spelman a registered psychologist, explained there are four distinct types of loneliness namely, emotional, social, situational and chronic. She explained, ‘Emotional loneliness’ is not circumstantial but, rather, comes from within. My guess is this lockdown will cause emotional loneliness for many, as we no longer seem to have much control over our movements, social life or on what is available to eat or drink. I believe the easiest way to counter emotional loneliness is to remind ourselves only our Lord God is the one with full control over everything including our lives, not us. This is why we are told in the bible passage below not to be anxious but for our peace to take our fears and worries to Him in prayer instead. Stay safe and well. Philippians 4:6-7 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Amen. Ola Lawal |
World Health Organization had now declared Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) a pandemic. It continues with its invisible rampage and there is no cure for it yet. There had been a few pandemics in recent years, Spanish flu, HIV/AIDS and Swine flu. Each one had caused a lot of devastation and fear. We therefore have reasons to be concerned and take precaution against COVID-19. That is sadly, all we can do.
It is at times like this we should remind ourselves of Lamentation 3:22 ‘Because of the LORD’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail.’ We worship a risen Saviour, Jesus Christ, our righteousness, sanctification and redemption. Let us pray for mercy and trust in His total care as we celebrate Easter. Jesus is risen!!! He has conquered all. He has dominion over all things and reigns forever as written in the passage below. |
Daniel 7:14
To Him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom,
That all peoples, nations, and languages should serve Him.
His dominion is an everlasting dominion,
Which shall not pass away,
And His kingdom the one
Which shall not be destroyed.

Age in America appears to be numbers considering the ages of the prominent candidates that are vying to stand for the 2020 presidential elections. The age of the seven prominent names ranged from 79 years to 69 years. The incumbent president is 74 years. The Speaker of the House of Representatives, a woman is 79 years. I do not know the true religious beliefs of these candidates or the Speaker. All I could sense is their belief that age should not stop them from serving their country.
To me, these candidates are all good examples for all older Christians to emulate. You often hear the phrase ‘I will leave that to the young ones.’ However, age should not be a barrier for actively serving God as abled. As we go into Lent, a time when we renew our dedication to Christ, let us all trust our Lord God for the zeal and strength we need to keep serving Him. According to the psalmist below, every one of us can flourish and still bear fruit in old age. Psalm 92: 12-14 (GNT) The righteous will flourish like palm trees; they will grow like the cedars of Lebanon. 13 They are like trees planted in the house of the Lord, that flourish in the Temple of our God, 14 that still bear fruit in old age and are always green and strong. Thank you, Lord Jesus, for allowing us to see 2020 and the end of another decade. Let us place 2020 in His hands and trust Him absolutely to do what is best for us. Calm yourselves with the Bible passage and the verse of my favourite hymn below when worry, fear or doubt try to creep in.
Isaiah 43: 1-3 (GNT) --- The Lord who created you says, “Do not be afraid—I will save you. I have called you by name—you are mine. When you pass through deep waters, I will be with you; your troubles will not overwhelm you. When you pass through fire, you will not be burned; the hard trials that come will not hurt you. For I am the Lord your God, --- All is well (Mary Bowley Peters, 1847) Through the love of God our Saviour, All will be well; Free and changeless is His favour; All, all is well. Precious is the blood that healed us; Perfect is the grace that sealed us; Strong the hand stretched out to shield us; All must be well. Amen and Amen. HAPPY, BLESSED & PEACEFUL 2020. Ola Lawal |
We thank God for another season of Advent. A time to remind ourselves of the first coming of Jesus Christ as a baby; His presence among us through the Holy Spirit; prepare for Christmas; prepare and anticipate His second coming.
There are so many issues that can easily disturb our spiritual preparations for Christmas. Worries about health, jobs, funds and relationships for example. When ugly fears and worries try to disturb our preparations and enjoyment of Christmas, let us remind ourselves of the love of Lord Jesus for us. To remember the meaning of His names and what they mean to us as believers as written in the passages below.
‘Immanuel’ means ‘God with us’. He is with us at all times and forever. As our Counsellor, He will comfort us and grant us the discernment we need. As our Mighty God, He will protect us and provide for us. And as our Prince of Peace He will grant us the peace we crave. Hallelujah!!!
Matthew 1:23
“The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”).
Isaiah 9:6
6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Happy, Blessed, Christmas!!!

Some of you might have heard of François Fénelon, a 17th Century French Roman Catholic poet, author, theologian and Archbishop. He wrote many Spiritual letters that have been translated into English. I first read about him from another article and decided to read the full letters.
He simplified prayer as follows: "Tell God all that is in your heart, as one unloads one's heart, its pleasures and its pains, to a dear friend. Tell Him your troubles, that He may comfort you; tell Him your joys, that He may sober them; tell Him your longings, that He may purify them; tell Him your dislikes, that He may help you to conquer them; talk to Him of your temptations, that He may shield you from them; show Him the wounds of your heart, that He may heal them; lay bare your indifference to good, your depraved tastes for evil, your instability. Tell Him how self-love makes you unjust to others, how vanity tempts you to be insincere, how pride disguises you to yourself and others. If you thus pour out all your weaknesses, needs, troubles, there will be no lack of what to say. You will never exhaust the subject. It is continually being renewed. People who have no secrets from each other never want for subject of conversations. They do not weigh their words, for there is nothing to be held back; neither do they seek for something to say. They talk out of the abundance of the heart without consideration they say just what they think. Blessed are they who attain to such familiar, unreserved conversation with God." François Fénelon’s explanation debunked our belief or excuse of ‘I do not know how to pray or what to say.’ We have ample suggestions here on how to pray. Try using some of them to help you pray. Prayer after all is the door to our shalom. Ephesians 6:18 ----Pray on every occasion, as the spirit leads. For this reason, keep alert and never give up; pray always for all God’s people. 1 Thessalonians 5:17 Pray at all times. Ola Lawal |
We often hear the sentence ‘how things have changed’. Some for the better and others sadly for the worse. Some changes might be seen as worse simply because they tamper with our cherished memories. While other changes are simply bad. I guess we can all name some of the bad ones.
Things may be changing around us but the good news is that our Lord God does not change. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and tomorrow and forever. His faithfulness and love for us do not change either. When you feel exasperated about the bad changes happening around you, try to keep your cool. Praise God for His love and faithfulness instead. Ask Him in prayer to help you adapt to positive change and to remain Christ like until the end. Psalm 103: 1, 17 & 18. Praise the Lord, my soul! All my being, praise his holy name! --- For those who honour the Lord, his love lasts forever, and his goodness endures for all generations of those who are true to his covenant and who faithfully obey his commands. I was given a pack of cards by a friend titled Joy & Hope. On each card is written one or two Bible verses and on the other side some encouraging words based on the verse. I felt slightly despondent recently and my mind went to the cards. I found myself asking the question can one truly be full of joy and hope when disappointed, frustrated and life is hard? I decided to read each of the cards. By the time I finished reading the twenty-seven cards, I truly felt joyous and hopeful.
It is possible to be full of hope and joy daily if we spend a bit of time reading or memorizing God’s words. The eternal love, comfort, peace, hope and joy our Lord, Jesus Christ has given us through His grace is enormous. Try to keep depression, fear and anxiety out of your life by holding on to God’s words. Below are the verses on two of the cards to share with you. Romans 15:13 NRSV May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope. 2 Thessalonians 2:16-17 NRSV Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and through grace gave us eternal comfort and good hope, comfort your hearts and strengthen them in every good work and word. Amen. Ola Lawal |
I quote two people. One said, ‘Life is so unfair for some of us who do nothing wrong.’ The other said, ‘Life is so unfair, those who are good always have an unlucky life’. Both statements are debateable. However, do you sometimes feel life is unfair too? I doubt you’re alone if you do so at times. My guess is many Christians sometimes feel life is unfair.
Injustice, poverty, ill-health, job loss, broken relationships, rejection, exclusion or being bypassed for promotion to mention a few, could all make one feel life is unfair at times. Don’t lose faith or be tempted to join the unrighteous whose joy is temporary. Pray and try to leave whatever makes you feel life is unfair at the feet of Lord Jesus. The passage below says, God will Himself perfect us and we will share in the eternal glory of Jesus Christ. 1 Peter 5: 7-11 Leave all your worries with him, because he cares for you. Be alert, be on watch! Your enemy, the Devil, roams around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. Be firm in your faith and resist him, because you know that other believers in all the world are going through the same kind of sufferings. But after you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who calls you to share his eternal glory in union with Christ, will himself perfect you and give you firmness, strength, and a sure foundation. To him be the power forever! Amen. Ola Lawal |
Someone said to me, ‘I don’t believe in giving donations to anyone and rarely to the church.’ The reason given was ‘I don’t have enough to spend on myself so why should I give away the little I have to others.’
Some of you probably encountered such people during your collection effort for the Christian Aid week. Can one ever have enough? It made me wonder how many people believe you only give out of plenty and not from the little they perceive as possessing. Christians know God first gave to us everything we have and enjoy. Giving to the church and the less fortunate is our way of acknowledging Lord Jesus’ undeserved and unmerited gifts to us. A way of thanking God for His enduring love for us. A way of promoting His kingdom on earth as it is in heaven. Keep doing your best. God’s love and gift to us are assured and eternal. Hallelujah!!! 2 Corinthians 9:7-9 & 15 You should each give, then, as you have decided, not with regret or out of a sense of duty; for God loves the one who gives gladly. And God is able to give you more than you need, so that you will always have all you need for yourselves and more than enough for every good cause. As the scripture says, “He gives generously to the needy; His kindness lasts forever.” Let us thank God for His priceless gift! Ola Lawal |

I like reading articles on health. Especially about the new things discovered which is claimed to be good or bad for one’s health. It is interesting how one research would say a certain food causes one disease and not so long afterwards another research would claim the opposite. The latest research I read said eating breakfast was no longer good for you despite the government’s guideline saying the opposite. The discrepancies simply confirmed we know little in reality.
Our all-knowing Lord is the One who truly knows everything. The only one that can save and look after His own in all situations as written in Psalm 91:14-16. Keep trusting in the One who can keep you safe from all hidden dangers and from all deadly diseases.
Psalm 91:14-16
God says, “I will save those who love me
and will protect those who acknowledge me as Lord.
When they call to me, I will answer them;
when they are in trouble, I will be with them.
I will rescue them and honour them.
I will reward them with long life;

The media tends to feed us with all that is wrong with our world. It rarely mentions the good deeds of the many who help the poor, the weak, the down-trodden, the jobless, the homeless, the frail older person and the sick. Neither does it take notice of the hospital nor the school staff who work tirelessly. Or those who risk their lives daily to save others.
It is only when we try to see the good things that Lord Jesus is doing for us daily, that we can fully appreciate He is risen and lives. Let us rejoice that we have a living Saviour who cares for us and His world. Sing or say the last verse of ‘I serve a living Saviour’ below to lift your spirit as you enjoy Easter.
Rejoice, rejoice, O Christian, lift up your voice and sing
Eternal hallelujahs to Jesus Christ the King!
The hope of all who seek Him, the help of all who find,
None other is so loving, so good and kind.
He lives, He lives, Christ Jesus lives today!
He walks with me and talks with me along life's narrow way.
He lives, He lives, Salvation to impart!
You ask me how I know He lives? He lives within my heart.
Happy, Blessed, Peaceful Easter.

Thank you, Lord Jesus for your care in 2018 and for bringing us safely into 2019.
Whatever 2019 holds in store, try to remain firmly in Jesus Christ’s embrace. Don’t dwell on the fears, anxieties or setbacks of last year. In this 2019, go forward boldly in the power of Jesus, knowing we have a faithful Shepherd who will never abandon His sheep. When in doubt, confused or anxious, try singing or reciting the words of the hymn below for the reassurance of God’s faithfulness and love. “Through the love of God our Saviour; All will be well; Free and changeless is His favour; All, all is well. Precious is the blood that healed us; Perfect is the grace that sealed us; Strong the hand stretched out to shield us; All must be well.” Happy, Blessed, Peaceful and Prosperous 2019. Ola Lawal |

Christmas is almost upon us again. The preparations and the running around to buy presents and food could easily become a nightmare if one is not careful. I still remember the interview some time ago asking what Christmas meant to different people. Some of the answers included eating, drinking and being with family members I would rather avoid.
Well, Jesus the light of the world is the only reason for Christmas. He came into the world to shine His light into our darkness which may be caused by broken relationships, ill-health, bereavement or job insecurity to name a few. Jesus is the Prince of Peace. Seek his peace for you and your loved ones. Keep Jesus at the center of your Christmas. Stay in His light. Only His light can overcome any darkness that may want to threaten your Christmas. Try to remember the passages below as you prepare for and celebrate Christmas.
Isaiah 9:6 (KJV)
For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
John 1:5 (NIV)

We all go through difficult and trying times. I have been through a few myself and know how testing such times could be.
At such times doubts about the omnipotence of our Lord God creeps in and our faith is sorely tested. It could be due to a stubborn illness affecting us or our loved one. It could be the difficult, life-changing situation that you feel is drowning you. The passage below is a good one to fall back on at such times. I personally find it helpful.

The media accounts of the country’s state of economy are not only alarming at times but downright scary. Headlines in the newspapers included numerous government cutbacks, food prices rising, shops closing down and big businesses cutting substantial manpower. This bombardment of information on the country’s faltering economy, makes it rather difficult for one not to be fearful or worry about its eventual effect on oneself, if not already affected.
Jesus Christ our Creator and Sustainer says, do not worry about the state of the economy. Trust Him to look after you. Continue to give generously to God and to those less fortunate than yourself. The Lord is your shepherd you will not lack anything you need as reinforced by Apostle Paul below.
2 Corinthians 9: 8 – 10
And God is able to give you more than you need, so that you will always have all you need for yourselves and more than enough for every good cause.
As the scripture says, “He gives generously to the needy; his kindness lasts forever.”
And God, who supplies seed for the sower and bread to eat, will also supply you with all the seed you need and will make it grow and produce a rich harvest from your generosity.

I hope you all had a good summer. It had been a sunny, lovely summer. Some of us have thoroughly enjoyed every minute of the warmth whilst it had been too much for others. The beauty of UK’s weather is that it changes roughly every three months so everyone gets to enjoy their favourite season. In Africa, the weather is either dry or wet. When dry, crops suffer and when wet, there is flooding. Houses and crops are sometimes washed away.
The thought of the proportional weather in the U.K. made vivid why many of the seasonal things we enjoy could easily be taken for granted. Why we sometimes forget to thank God the Creator and the Giver, for the abundant harvest we enjoy.
Let us remember to thank God with all of ourselves, time and money. To praise Him for the wonderful things He has done for us. To name our blessing one by one and thank Him for them. To thank Lord Jesus for His deliverance, protection and provision. Be like the psalmist and thank God each day.
Psalm 145: 1, 2, 14, 19-21.
I will proclaim your greatness, my God and king; I will thank you forever and ever.
Every day I will thank you; I will praise you forever and ever.
He helps those who are in trouble; he lifts those who have fallen.
He supplies the needs of those who honour him; he hears their cries and saves them.
He protects everyone who loves him, -----
I will always praise the Lord; let all his creatures praise his holy name forever.

We live in uncertain times, where many look after number one first, even country leaders.
It’s getting more difficult to say you’re a Christian. Many bad behaviours are now acceptable under the pretence of human rights. It is lots easier to join in than to stay separate at times. Many are also afraid to say what they believe or stand up for what is right.
Well, my friends in Christ, you have been called. You ‘live in the world but not of the world’. You will surely get the reward for doing and standing up for what is right. Refuse to be less compassionate and loving of others. Stay close with Lord Jesus.
Be encouraged by Apostle Jude’s reassurance below.
Jude 1, 2, 20-21 (GNT)
To those who have been called by God, who live in the love of God the Father and the protection of Jesus Christ:
May mercy, peace, and love be yours in full measure.
---- My friends, keep on building yourselves up on your most sacred faith. Pray in the power of the Holy Spirit, and keep yourselves in the love of God, as you wait for our Lord Jesus Christ in his mercy to give you eternal life.

Wasn’t Prince Harry & Megan Markle’s wedding beautiful? I was glad it had ended well for them despite their childhood heartache of losing a mother and a father figure respectively. Life has dealt a tremendous blow to many over the years and only a few got to the end of the tunnel or can see the light at the end of the tunnel. If your situation is like this presently, keep trusting God. Cling to Jesus Christ whatever you’re suffering with or hoping for. Be rest assured that God is able, loves you and with you at all times. Your physical need might not be satisfied yet or prayer answered in the manner you expect. He will do all according to His will for you in the end as he sees the bigger picture. What more, as children of God your eternal life is assured. Stay firm, stay strong with Christ. God’s promises can be relied upon. |
John 6:35, 39 &40
Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.”

Are you in a valley presently and unsure of the way out? It is a familiar feeling we get when troubled, confused or sad. It feels like there is no way out of the tunnel. This sadly could explain why some out of despondency abuse their bodies or worse, commit suicide.
As Christians, we should try never to become despondent. We have a solid foundation in Jesus Christ. We have our Good Shepherd, Jesus Christ of Nazareth, the name above all names. It means we can rely on Him to eventually guide us out of the valley. What more, we have His promise of eternal life. We can trust in His unfailing care, love and mercy. This is probably why Psalm 23 written by King David, is loved by many of us. I often repeat to myself verses 1, 4 and 6 for provision, peace and reassurance of his eternal love. Shalom. |
Psalm 23 (NIV)
A psalm of David.
1 The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
4 Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
6 Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

The seasons turn around fast. Which is your best season? Mine is the Spring. I love to see the change in the garden. The sun bursting through, the daffodils springing up to life and the birds tweeting away. One feels somewhat rejuvenated too after the gloomy, cold, long days.
I know it could be difficult to see the bright side of life when, ill - health, loss, loneliness, financial worries and so many other overwhelming issues encroach upon us. Jesus is risen. Jesus has conquered all. Don’t allow that worry, fear or pain to overwhelm you. We have a redeemer who has promised us an eternity of joy with him. The passage below may help you to see beyond your present issue and to focus on Jesus’ love for you. 2 Corinthians 4:16-18 Therefore, we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So, we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. Happy, Blessed Easter!!! Ola Lawal |
A few weeks ago, I preached about Jesus being the voice of authority we should follow and listen to. Jesus voice speaks to us through the Holy Bible but we cannot benefit from His words if we hardly read our Bible. A few days afterwards, I read the devotion below. My first thought was Jesus wanted me to remind you about the advantages of reading your Bible regularly as well, so decided to share it with you.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. (John 1:1 NRSV)
Colleen Townsend Evans tells about a moving dream a friend recounted to her. The dream began in a great, open room, filled with distraught and sorrowful people. As the people milled about, the door to the room opened and Jesus stepped in. He turned to a man nearby nd asked, "What is the matter, My child?" The man replied that he wasted his life in chasing after business success. All his workaholism left no time for a relationship with the Lord. Jesus asked, "But didn't you get my letter?" The man seemed astonished that Jesus had written him a letter. Jesus said, "Oh yes, I wrote you a letter. I said, 'Consider the lilies of the field . . . how they grow. They toil not, neither do they spin . . . Seek you first My Kingdom . . . and all the things you need I will give to you.'" The man's anguished reply was, "My pastor told me of this letter, but I never knew you wrote it for me!"
Then Jesus approached a sobbing woman. She confessed that ever since her husband died she had spent her life in worrying, always fretting about the future and what it may hold for her. Jesus asked, "But, My child, didn't you read my letter?"
"You wrote me a letter, Lord? Surely, if you had written me a letter, I would have read it right away."
And Jesus answered, "But I know I wrote to you and said, 'Happy are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted . . . Do not be anxious for tomorrow . . . I will give you whatever you need.'"
The woman recalled with a start that those were the very words the pastor quoted at her husband's funeral. Did Jesus really mean them to apply to her life?
"Oh, yes," Jesus replied, "I wrote that for you."
Jesus continued around the room, talking to each sorrowing person. In each case, he heard tales of people turning away from God to pursue riches, ambition, lusts, pride. And in every case, Jesus answered them with a letter meant specifically for their lives.
Have you read Jesus' letter?
Loving God, thank you for your letter to me. May I take full advantage of reading it. Amen.

Are you still dwelling on the mistakes or disappointments of 2017? Let’s be honest it’s very difficult to let go and trust God. However, only God can help us control the negative and sad memories that hunt us. This is why the Bible tells us to cast our care on God for He cares for us, 1 Peter 5:7. To commit our way, our plans and our hopes to the Lord, Psalm 37:5. This 2018, God asks us to forget whatever is causing our regret, hopelessness and sadness. He wants us to trust Him. Lord Jesus will do new, great and beautiful things for us. He will make way where there is no way. He will heal that stubborn physical ailment. He will grant us the clarity of mind, wisdom and understanding needed for 2018. Why? He loves us and His Word never fails. God’s words below still applies today. Hold on to them. Isaiah 43:18-19 (NIV) “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland. Ola Lawal |
Thank you Father God for your love and blessings in 2017.
We have positive expectation that as your children, 2018 will be full of all that is good for us, because you love us and had made us perfect. As you are in heaven Lord Jesus, so we are in this world (1 John 4:17). Cast out all our fears. We entrust 2018 into your loving arms. Help us to stay strong by regularly reminding ourselves the words of the song below. “Through the love of God our Saviour All will be well Free and changeless is His favour All, all is well Precious is the blood that healed us, Perfect is the grace that sealed us, Strong is the hand stretch’d forth to shield us, All must be well” Amen. Happy, Blessed, Peaceful and Healthy New Year. Ola Lawal |

How has 2017 been for you? Peaceful, full of joy or rather stressful and sad. Life is seen as either good or bad. When seen as bad, we lose confidence, dread the future and even lose hope at times. We try God’s patience by our lack of trust and belief in His miraculous Power.
At Christmas we remember and celebrate God who became human to save us and bring us Peace. Let us try to discard our fears, sadness and anxieties this Christmas for good. As children of God, the prediction by Isaiah to the House of David is for us too. Whatever you dread will be laid waste.
Do not allow anything to ruin your enjoyment of Christmas. Keep faith in Immanuel (God with us), Everlasting Father and Prince of Peace. Christ has come and left us with his peace. Accept His peace in faith. He will resolve whatever problem you have, in His own good time.
Isaiah 7:13-16
Then Isaiah said, “Hear now, you house of David! Is it not enough to try the patience of humans? Will you try the patience of my God also? Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel. He will be eating curds and honey when he knows enough to reject the wrong and choose the right, for before the boy knows enough to reject the wrong and choose the right, the land of the two kings you dread will be laid waste.
Happy, Peaceful & Blessed Christmas Everyone

What is humility? According to Concise dictionary, it’s ‘the quality of having a modest or low view of one’s importance’. Other people’s perception of one’s humility is dependent on the environment. Depending on the environment, one could be seen as a doormat, lacking confidence, inadequate or even arrogant.
Psalm 131 described humility as total dependence on God and not on our outward image. Tee’s interpretation was really good that I’ve quoted it for you - ‘Psalm 131 is one prayer in Scripture that can help us to “become like little children” (Matt. 18:3) and to let go of the battle in our mind over what we don’t understand (Ps. 131:1). Instead, through time with Him we can return to a place of peace (v. 2), finding the hope we need (v. 3) in His love—as calm and quiet as if we were children again in our mothers’ arms (v. 2).’ (Sim Kay Tee)
Father, God, help us to let go of self and learn to trust you totally. Amen.

Amen.

Fed up with that ill-heath, that lack of job or good job, a life that appears to be stagnant, relationships that have collapsed or approaching total collapse? Don’t go down the way of the world to remedy it. Most of the available worldly quick-fix answers and self-help advice hardly ever work. They mostly give transient relief. We are in the world but not of the world. Be patient, forgiving and non-judgemental. Ask Lord Jesus Christ to be at the centre of your life or the situation you might be facing. Ask Him to renew and restore you or your situation. Try regular reading of the Psalm 80 verses below, changing the ‘us’ to ‘me’ and the ‘son to daughter’ as appropriate, for sustenance. Grant us your mercy O Lord. Amen Psalm 80: 14, 15 & 19 Return to us, God Almighty! Look down from heaven and see! Watch over this vine, the root your right hand has planted, the son you have raised up for yourself... 1Restore us, Lord God Almighty; make your face shine on us, that we may be saved. Ola Lawal |

The reasons why we become stagnant or refuse to take a leap of faith into the unknown include fear of failure, fear of rejection or fear of losing face. How can we fully use our God given gifts unless we take a leap of faith at times?
If Jesus Christ had put an idea or thought in your heart that refuses to go away, He wants you to do something about it. Cast all your anxieties on Lord Jesus. Even if you falter along the way, He’s always there to lift you up and help you. Trust Him and move forward in faith.
Psalm 37: 23-24
The LORD guides us in the way we should go
and protects those who please him.
If they fall, they will not stay down,
because the LORD will help them up.
1Peter 5:7
Cast all your anxieties on him because he cares for you.

Earlier this year, I was faced with some difficult decision-making. My heart wanted the easier option, but reality said the opposite. Many decisions are difficult because of sentiments, confusion or loss of the familiar that may ensue by the decision taken.
A few days later, whilst reading Psalm 32, verses 8 and 10 jumped out at me. They gave me real peace that I started to sing ‘Praise my soul the King of Heaven’, my favourite hymn. I don’t know the final outcome of my decision, but will hold on firmly to God’s promise of guidance and mercy. When faced with difficult decision-making, pray and hold on to His promises below. Psalm 32: 8, 10 (NKJV) I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye... ... But he who trusts in the Lord, mercy shall surround him. Ola Lawal |
Having a genuine, meaningful conversation with someone could be really difficult at times. This is probably why some avoid it. We usually have no ulterior motives or negative intentions when conversing. Nevertheless, depending on, the perceived tone of voice, face expression or state of mind of the person being conversed with, it could result in anger and disharmony. To avoid this, let’s stop reading extra meanings into what is said and take things on face value. If disconcerted by a conversation, ask for clarification from the person and an apology if necessary. Accept the person’s explanation or apology and leave it at that. As God’s beloved children, we are supposed to promote peace, love and harmony. We should always try to put out the ember of discord before it becomes a blazing flame. Remember who you are in Lord Jesus Christ and be holy.
Colossians 3:12-17 (GNT) You are the people of God; he loved you and chose you for his own. So then, you must clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Be tolerant with one another and forgive one another whenever any of you has a complaint against someone else. You must forgive one another just as the Lord has forgiven you. And to all these qualities add love, which binds all things together in perfect unity. Ola Lawal |

I must confess D.I.Y. (Do It Yourself) is not my favourite past-time. I love to have things sorted and ready to use. If everything in life could be sorted and in the way we wanted, I guess life could become boring! This is probably why some enjoy all sorts of D.I.Y.
However, we need more than brawn, skill or our small wisdom to sort out many difficult problems. Which is why we get bogged down, become emotional and mental wrecks whilst trying all sorts of untoward solutions (D.I.Ys.) instead of seeking help. My friends, Jesus Christ is the true and only D.I.Y. specialist of our lives. He’s the only one that can perfectly put our lives together and resolve that difficult problem. Do not get bogged down by the problem you cannot do anything about. Take it to Lord Jesus Christ, our ever-present help and fortress in times of trouble. Shalom. Proverbs 18:10 The name of the Lord is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe. Psalm 46:1&7 1 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. 7 The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. |

Jesus Christ is full of grace. He is non-judgemental and loves us warts and all. Halleluiah! He hopes His unconditional love and forgiveness would help us to be more like Him. This selfless love made Jesus Christ die on the cross for our sins to restore us with God. This is what we remember and celebrate at Easter.
Why then, do we find it difficult to truly love and forgive others? Why is our love and kindness dependent on our terms and conditions? Soften your hearts and love more.
In John 8:1-11 story, Jesus Christ did not tell the adulteress woman to seek forgiveness and sin no more before saying, “Neither do I condemn you”. He simply forgave and encouraged her to sin no more. Amazing Jesus! Jesus saved her from death. She must have been very overwhelmed by His forgiveness and love, causing repentance.
We should all try showing this unconditional love to our offender. Seeing God’s love in action may encourage remorse and closeness to Lord Jesus. Both the offender and offended thus ending in His eternal Kingdom.
John 8: 10-11
When Jesus had raised Himself up and saw no one but the woman, He said to her, “Woman, where are those accusers of yours? Has no one condemned you?”
She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said to her, “Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more.”
Happy, Renewed, Restored and Blessed Easter!!!

There are times we feel low, unsure of the next step to take and weary. At such times, the ideal thing is to sing praise worship songs, thank God for all His goodness to us in the past and take our weariness to Him in prayer. Jesus Christ, after all has opened the gates for us to approach Him directly. However, these are the last things we think of doing, when in a low place.
When low, sing praise worship songs, some of which are prayer in themselves and think more of God’s everlasting mercy and love for you. Your peace and joy will soon be restored. Psalm 100:4-5 (NKJV) Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, And into His courts with praise. Be thankful to Him, and bless His name. For the Lord is good; His mercy is everlasting, And His truth endures to all generations. Ola Lawal |
WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT
One could easily assume what Jesus meant when he said “I am the life” in John 14:6, was limited to abundant living here on earth if we believe in Him. However, 1 John 5, makes it clear that it includes everlasting life. What a great gift! Considering we simply need to repent form our sins (Acts 3:19), accept and believe Jesus Christ is the Son of God. Do not tarry my friends, believe in the only name that assures you of eternal life. It’s also a great comfort to know that all our loved ones who accepted and believed in Him, are enjoying a great eternity and that we’ll see them again by believing this simple truth. John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 1 John 5:5, 11-13 5 Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God. 11 And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. 13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life. We thank our Father God for His love, peace, mercy and provision in 2016.
We have positive expectation that as your children, in 2017, all will be well because nothing is too difficult for you. Renew and restore us, so we could be more like you in 2017. We entrust 2017 into your loving arms, knowing with you as our Lord and Saviour all is well. (Mary Bowley Peters, 1847) “Through the love of God our Saviour All will be well Free & changeless is His favour All all is well Precious is the blood that healed us, Perfect is the grace that sealed us, Strong is the hand stretch’d forth to shield us, All must be well” Amen. Wishing you all a Blessed, Happy, Healthy, Peaceful and Prosperous New Year. Ola Lawal |
Joyful, Peaceful, Blessed Christmas Everyone!!
|
Jesus Christ’s coming that first Christmas, was to give all people great joy. To glorify God who became man so as to bring us closer to Him and to grant us all His Shalom, meaning, Peace, Completeness, Soundness and Welfare. (Strong’s Concordance)
As we prepare and celebrate another Christmas, let us remember to glorify God for this great gift. Let us share this great joy and goodwill in various ways with everyone. Meaning, not just with our friends and family, but also those we do not get on very well with or seen as outsiders. Shalom. Luke 2: 10, 11 & 14 Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord. “Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!” |
No one is perfect because it is impossible to fulfil all of God’s laws.
Thank you God, for the blood of Jesus Christ that has washed clean, all who accept Him as their Lord and Saviour. We are now forgiven and justified because His death and resurrection has accomplished this great mercy. Jesus Christ’s sacrifice has granted us the grace of becoming, the righteousness of God (perfect in God’s eyes) for ever. Halleluiah!!! Let us express our gratitude to God by being more Christ-like, showing to others more of this free love and grace, in our daily living. 2 Corinthians 5:17-21 (NIV) Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God. God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. |

We will all welcome good, positive news instead of the fearful ones we hear and read daily. Brexit is the latest culprit for possible economic downturn; reduced standard of living; jobs losses etc. The fear and warnings of possible terrorists’ random attacks make most people nervous. Not to mention the random knife attacks on innocent passers – by the mentally disturbed. It is inhuman not to be a little concerned.
However, it is our faithful, ever loving God that had cared and loaded us with benefits over the years. He will continue to protect and provide for His own children. Keep your eyes steadfastly on the omnipotent Lord Jesus and not the negative news.
Psalm 68: 19-20
Blessed be the Lord,
Who daily loads us with benefits,
The God of our salvation! Selah
Our God is the God of salvation;
And to GOD the Lord belong escapes from death.

The saying ‘absolute power corrupts absolutely’ (by John Emerich Edward Dalberg Acton, first Baron Acton (1834–1902)) is still very apt in our world today. This is why many will fight tooth and nail to hold on to their position of power or usurp it. We are gently reminded by the passage below that Jesus Christ has called us to serve and not to be served. He wants us to help those in need as best as we could without expecting anything in return. Our reward is eternal enjoyment in Lord Jesus’ kingdom where we will be made “kings and priests unto His God and Father.” (Revelations 1:6). Loving Lord Jesus grant us the humility and selflessness needed to serve one another. Amen.
Luke 22:25-27 Jesus said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves. For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves. |
